Anti-Racism and Allyship in the Workplace: A Guide - Business in the Community

Anti-Racism and Allyship in the Workplace: A Guide

Become an effective ally by following the guidance outlined in this guide.

Racism is a daily reality for Black, Asian, Mixed Race and ethnically diverse people in the UK. Leaders influence their organisation and have a far-reaching impact on how people feel at the workplace, and subsequently, the productivity and value that employees bring to their job.

Allyship was added to the Race at Work Charter in 2021 which now has more than 1000 employer signatories. The recommendations in this guide are not comprehensive. It outlines the steps individuals in the workplace can take towards becoming an effective ally.

Actions for leaders

While there are actions all leaders can take, it is important for leaders to think carefully about their individual influence and to take action that responds to the specific needs of their organisation.

It is challenging to act with conviction without building a foundation of understanding and empathy first. There are opportunities to learn about racial inequalities and not just through countless books, documentaries, and podcasts, but also being aware of the racial disparities that exist and through having open conversations.
